The state of Twitter: Trump passes Pope as most-followed world leader

Having successfully weaponized Twitter to win the presidency and bludgeon our senses with a constant barrage of egotistical and offensive tweets, President Trump can now also claim the crown of being the world’s most-followed leader on Twitter.

Way to go, Twitter!

According to the latest update from Twiplomacy, an ongoing social media project run by global public relations and communications firm Burson-Marsteller, Trump has now passed the Pope in number of followers.

This might seem inevitable and leave you shrugging your shoulders. But it’s worth noting that as of May 2016, Trump’s follower count was in the 7 million range. Now he’s about to blow past 40 million.

Of course, Katy Perry has 104.5 million followers, making her the most-followed person overall on Twitter. So, Trump still has a ways to go before knocking her from that perch.

Still, even knowing there’s a lot of bot-fueled following going on with Trump, it’s an impressive rise. It also means that he’s not likely to dial back his early morning Twitter rants anytime soon.

Here’s the Twiplomacy leaderboard from Burson-Marsteller:
